7 Year Limit
shyamala - 05-12-10 00:20
Dear All,
I needed some info on the 7-yr board limitations for step 3 applications.
I have crossed the 7-yr limit - unfortunately becos of being refused visa thrice and finally getting it last yr - could luckily complete 1,2 and CS within that time limit, but not step 3..planning step 3 in aug this yr.. and then for the match subsequently. I had a few qs:
1) Which board can i choose (which is safe - no limitations and licensure req) to apply for step 3?
2) Does this mean that I cannot apply to these boards (which have the 7-yr limit) for residency?
3)Does this also mean that I have very few choices? I wanted to opt for Obgyn - is that possible?
4) Is that the ERAS application is sent to only those boards which we choose? What is the process?
Kindly help..

There r some State Boards which have a 10 year limit for passing all the USMLE steps.U can visit the website www.fsmb.org to know about such states.
U can apply to all states for residency.
U can apply to all specialties even to Ob and Gyn as well.
No, ERAS application is sent to all programs to which u apply.
Good Luck!

shyamala - 05-13-10 00:59 Thanks very much Adonis, that sure was a relief to know that I can apply to all states for residency, cos I was really confused as to what to do if i cant apply to all states for residency - was wondering if the 7 yr limit applies only for step 3 or for residency programs also..
thanks very much, im relieved..for step 3 as u said, i am planning to put down either Delaware, Maryland or South Carolina - as they have the 10 yr limit with no other requirements.

If these states donot require u to have any graduate medical education in the US, then u can go ahead with yur application.
Good Luck!
