About Applying To Prelim/Cat Programs

when you select you programs in ERAS appl. it asks you whether you are applying for Prelim or Catagorical position? of course that applies only for programs who offers both. the question is; if is it considered good or bad from a program director point of view to apply for both? and what's the right thing to do?

It will not look good because they will think that u r using preliminary year only as a back.It will also make them suspect yur genuine interest in the categorical specialty.
Do not do it until u have a really genuine interest in pursuing some other specialty after doing a preliminary year.
Good Luck!

Don't make an issue out of this mistake now by letting the PD know about it.
If u did at a few places then it won't obviously have much of an effect on yur application, and if u r called for an interview then u can give some logical explanation for it.
However, if u still wanna do so then it wud better to call the program coordinators of the said programs instead and simply let them know about it.
There is also an option on ERAS like " I would like to notify this program that I am withdrawing myself" and then u can only mark the type of training u r withdrawing from, which in yur case is the preliminary training. But ,first do check with someone if doing so will actualy withdraw u from the preliminary track only and not from the categorical track.First do confirm so with certainty by caling or writing to the ERAS.
Good Luck!

bingousmle - 09-17-10 01:04 probably this issue may be very important for internal medicine but does it hold good for general surgery non designated spots also as people i talked to did not say anything about it..
