The fullform of LOR is 'Letter of Recommendation'.It is written by someone from the faculty under whom u worked or did some research, etc.
LORs can also be written by your friends, family mambers for you,but they won't carry that much of significance in residency application.
An LOR describes one's academic flair and other characteristics like dedication, ability to work in a team, etc.
They are helpful when one applies to residency programs, not in the usual USMLE exam process.
Good Luck!
