Mallory-Weiss syndrome or gastro-esophageal laceration syndrome refers to bleeding from tears (a Mallory-Weiss tear) in the mucosa at the junction of the stomach and esophagus, usually caused by severe retching, coughing, or vomiting.

Sudden and/or severe onset of pain should lead the clinician toward an emergent evaluation. In the absence of hemodynamici nstability, those causes are less likely to warrant emergent workup. Emesis with pain is not enough, by itself, to warrant emergent workup.
