A 32 yr-old man has a four day history of progressive weakness in his extremities. He has been healthy except for an upper respiratory tract infection ten days ago.His temperature is 37.8 deg C,BP is 130/80 mmHg,pulse is 94/min,and respirations are 42/min and shallow. He has symmetric weakness of both sides of the face and the proximal and distal muscles of the extremities.Sensation is intact. No deep tendon reflexes can be elicited;the plantar responses are flexor.Which of the following is the most likely diagnosis?

symmetric weakness of both sides of the face and the proximal and distal muscles of the extremities.Sensation is intact. No deep tendon reflexes can be elicited;the plantar responses are flexor.ie Guillain-Barre syndrome

the clue to the diagnosis is motor involvement with relative sparing of the sensory system....usually after a respiratory inf or vaccine

usually exhibits as an ascending paralysis noted by weakness in the legs that spreads to the upper limbs and the face along with complete loss of deep tendon reflexes. With prompt treatment by plasmapheresis or intravenous immunoglobulins and supportive care, the majority of patients will regain full functional capacity.
