doctor1 - 03-19-08 20:11 though i am not applying for obgyn , this definitely is a very good move , i wish you the very best, but still with the post match (though its partially non existent to me ) and off cycle positions i think its a bit early to call it for next match ..good luck

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 03-22-08 00:05 thanks doctor 1 and radhe!!
thats in fact a good news
my situation is similar, one score in nintees, other is 79
step 3 i have to take soon, IMG, need visa.
going for 4 months of OBS now.
i did a big blunder applying on oct 1 last year, one reason was that my CS results came very late.
and of course my search of prog was not proper
so this time i am giving a very sincere effort
radhe can u give contact of ur frind who got in obgyn????????
and can both u and doctor 1 tell, how we should decide which college to apply?

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 03-24-08 13:35 The holidays! At least for me (since I live in a catholic country). OB/GYN Programs I know have IMGs for sure: Lincoln hospital, NY; St. Barnabs, NJ; Temple University, PA, and not usre about Wayne State, MI. What it is I'm sure is that they require USCE

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 03-25-08 09:02 Apply carefully: buy customized lists or make contact withh people you know, try to know people at your observership hospital and lots, lots of experience and contacts will help your way.
#15
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
doctor1 - 03-25-08 10:38 yup thats true!! try to work hard during ur observershipa nd develop contacts , the best can be to have ur attending call or talk to his counterparts in the programs u r applying as that will really keep u ahead of other applicants

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 03-26-08 02:26 sorry doctor one i didnt understand what u told me
please can u explain it further
thanks in advance
radhe... is the coustomized kist from match a resident website more helpful
or shall i go by the number of imgs the colleges r having in past 3 to 4 years ?
also should i follow any other website if u can suggest some?

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 03-26-08 02:32 to radhe and doctor one,
when i am doing the observerships can i go ahead and ask for some research projects?
since my observerships lasts for only 1 month at one place, can i do anything concrete in that period?
everyone says that research takes some time, 3 -6 months, so will it be useful if i ask them for that
even if they give me some good project because of my visa status which is b1, i cant stay for more than 6 months, in that case what shall i do?
thanks
#18
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 03-26-08 11:30 The customized list of Match-A-Resident.com is pretty good, but you have to pay for it. USMLEtoMD.com has good lists, but somewhat incompplete, anyways you have to contact programs before applying to know where do you stand with them.
About the obsie, try to see if they have any ongoing research project and even if you are not part of the team, give a couple of hours as a volunteer. Like that they can contact you in the future or help a resident to do a poster... that is a good idea. If they give you the opportunity try to do it with your B1 visa, but if they are going to pay you, try to change visa status to J1 or H1B

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-02-08 10:45 The cause that you don't see many people interested in OB/Gyn is the false conception that is one of the hardest specialty to get for IMGs. Which it was true for a couple of years, but recently it had become somehow approachable. Good luck to all the Ob/Gyn candidates. Not easy, but not as hard as previously thought

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 04-02-08 15:01 thanks
what do they expect the most from us
like answering well their qustions or the latest stuff knowledge
can we get some research work there?
#28
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
doctor1 - 04-02-08 18:38 a very good approach to any case can be to pull up the latest information about it like from uptodate and discuss it with the attending as it shows ur iterest in the subject and also increease ur knowledge base ,

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-03-08 13:07 I tried to do that in my observership, and that is a double edged weapon. Some faculties won't care about it, and the ones that don't know the info would think that you are trying to make them look bad. The best thing is to kep quiet, do the job the assigned you, and try to shadow Interns and residents. Help the interns to do their jobs, and keep residents updated. Remeber, you are doing a sub-intern job, but without touching any patients(eventually they would allow you to do that). Try not to shine so much, people would hate it. Just try to be before the interns, have all the patients charts updated, and eager to learn, but don't be too eager.

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 04-03-08 16:20 ok i think best is to be silent for few days
watch how the proceedings are going?
then slowly start opening out
if that is favourable
what do u say
atleast we should know what is happening with each pateint as in progress and investigations!!!!!!!

any idea how new york mount sinai obg prog is??
i have got observership for a month there
will that be helpful????
i heard that prog is not very img friendly!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#41
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-15-08 13:59 The program is not IMG friendly but it will look good in your CV that you went there. Also, you might find rotators from other programs, and Attendings that might give you a good LOR (from Mount Sinai, NY), besides they work with Albert Einstein which some hospitals have IMG friendly programs like Montefiore

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 04-16-08 21:12 hello radhe.. and The One...
As I already told u that i will be going to mount sinai new york for obg observership
I am looking out for accomodation there
but its manhatten and place is very costly
can u help me ??? i mean do u have any idea for places for rent there for a month
as such i have a friend in brooklyn, but its too much of travelling everyday
what u say??????
#46
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-16-08 22:24 To travel from Brooklyn! in Manhattan, and mainly in the Mount Sinai zone is super expensive. Actually there is a place close to the Metropolitan Hospital (96 st. and 2nd Ave) not far from Mount Sinai where some of the Lincoln Hospital staff lives. It is like small studios, and the bathroom is shared but I think is not expensive. But if you have a freind in Brooklyn, I recommend you to wake up everyday a little earlier and commute to Manhattan everyday. Your pocket will be grateful

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
docfae - 04-16-08 23:04 hi i'm glad i've come across this forum. i'm an IMG too who's hoping to get into a good OBGYN residency program. i would also like to do some observerships in OBGYN, do you know of hospitals who take in IMGs as observers? how did you apply for your observership, radhamesramos? thanks and goodluck!

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 04-17-08 16:47 hi docfae,

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-24-08 09:57 Happy to hear that! Hopefully you'll get contacts there that will get you an interview. But, try to get the LORs (always ask them at the end of your obsie), so you can apply to other places.
#57
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
meghaww - 04-24-08 17:52 ya sure!!!!!!!!!!
i am going to ask for that in coming week since it will be my last week there
i will keep posting to u
as i told u before i have to go to new york now
can u help me advicing for some accomodation there
in that hosp also if everyone expect me to come by 6 then commuting will be a big problem
i am confused?????????
thanks radhe
#58
Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-25-08 11:32 commuting in New York is a smaller problem since this city has the best public transportation system in the whole world, but try to find something close to it. acommodations are really expensive, so try to find who lives there. Close to the metropolitan hospital there is a place with studios for around 600 US a month, the thing is that I don't have the exact adress ,but if you happen to know somebody at the Metropolitan or Lincoln hospitals that are residents, ask them for that information...it is a good area, very convenient to Mount sinai and not expensive at all

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
radhamesramos - 04-30-08 16:24 Try to get a research position...this will put you in contact with faculty staff, and then you can make your way smoothly over there. If not, passs the exams first, then when they see you are serious about it, they might give you a chance

Thanks radhamesramos!! Yes I'm excited about it and meanwhile searching for some other places to renforce my next year application.
I also agree with your approach about smyomer's situation and just add that you can do some work at any clinic by calling the physicians and asking for a "Job Shadowing". This will put you ahead of others and adds to you resume some valuable points. GL

Re: all those who aspire for obgyn
optimistic - 02-13-11 14:02 Hi,
I am a visa-requiring IMG who did electives at Mount Sinai... and even though they are not known to be an IMG friendly program, i still felt this experience was a serious boost to my application.... it's all about meeting the right people and working hard and impressing them to get a good LOR. I would recommend this elective experience to everybody. They were very nice and helpful and if you work hard, you are recognized and rewarded for your efforts. Good luck!!
I am in this year's match! Best of luck to everyone.
