The abductor pollicis brevis is innervated by the recurrent branch of the median nerve...so involved in carpal tunnel syndrome

The patient’s signs and symptoms are consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome, which is caused by compression of or injury to the median nerve. Thumb abduction is powered by the median nerve-abductor, namely the abductor pollicis brevis. The abductor pollicis longus is innervated by the posterior interosseous nerve (a branch of the radial nerve) and functions more as a thumb extender than thumb abductor, despite its name. Thumb adduction is powered by the adductor pollicis (ulnar nerve). Thumb opposition is a complex motion involving thumb flexion, abduction and pronation. Opponens pollicis plays a role in thumb opposition, but loss of this muscle can be compensated by other muscles. This appears to be a good answer choice, but loss of opposition in carpal tunnel syndrome appears after loss of thumb abduction. Thumb extension (extensor pollicis longus) as well as small finger extension (extensor digit minimi and extensor digitorum communis) are innervated by the posterior interosseous nerve, a branch of the radial nerve.
