A 2-year-old child is seen in the emergency center with the complaint
of fever and a limp. As you begin your evaluation of this child, you
remember that acute osteomyelitis
a. Is most commonly caused by Streptococcus pyogenes
b. Often arises following development of deep cellulitis
c. Results in tenderness in the region of infection that is diffuse, not localized
d. Causes bony changes visible radiographically within 48 h of the beginning of
symptoms
e. Requires antibiotic therapy usually for 10 to 14 days

keepemalive - 10-04-11 20:22 My reasoning was: I wasn't sure about "a" (it's been a while since I've looked over my micro pages)... I knew "b" was already a correct fact, but kept on going.... "c" I knew was wrong because osteomyelitis can pretty much be pointed to with one finger once it starts hurting.... "d" is a real lie because there's no way bone changes that fast (unless you fall and break one majorly)... and "e"... well, I remember someone saying that anything-myelitis needs pretty long-term pharm to make it better. So I went back and kept my "b". :-)
