- A positive viral load in the first 48 hours indicates in-utero transmission. When transmission occurs during delivery (the most common scenario), the viral load at 48 hours is negative
(The patient is in the initial stages of the infection and has not produced sufficient viral copies to be detected). However, the viral load may be detectable at 2–6 weeks, so repeating the viral load on more than one occasion is recommended. Remember that any positive test should be confirmed before starting treatment.
- HIV antibody testing is useless in infants, and quantified titers are not typically generated.
