Sumatriptan is structurally similar to serotonin, and is a 5-HT agonist. The specific receptor subtypes it activates are present on the neurons associated with the detection of pain, activation of these inhibitory receptors reduces the activity of these pain neurons and relieves the pain associated with migraine.

The most common side effects of triptans are facial flushing, tingling of the skin, and a sense of tightness around the chest and throat. Other less common side effects include drowsiness, fatigue, and dizziness.

coronary artery vasospasm, transient myocardial ischemia, myocardial infarction, ventricular tachycardia, and ventricular fibrillation are amongst the serious side effects
