yehia1982 - 10-24-08 17:15 Patients suffering primarily from chronic bronchitis are referred to as "blue bloaters", while patients suffering primarily from emphysema are referred to as "pink puffers".
The term "blue bloater" is derived from the bluish color of the lips and skin
The term "pink puffer" is derived from the reddish complexion and the "puffing" (hyperventilation)

blue bloaters are obese ,smokers,pink puffers usually thin
blue bloaters have very much decreased oxygen and greatly raised co2 where as in PP o2 is slighly low with either normal or even decreased co2
blue bloaters have bronchitis while PP have emphysema
BB havecough and sputum as prominent feature while PP have dyspnoea
BB haveincreased lung marking on XRC where as PP have hyperinflated picture
BB develop into pulm HPN,cor pulmonale while PP may have pnemothorax as complication
