conym5 - 08-15-09 07:32 Medical experts have evidence that HIV can pass from an infected mother to her child through her breast milk. As a result, the World Health Organization, the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Centers for Disease Control advise against nursing if you are HIV-positive and a safe alternative is available.

drtomusa - 10-08-09 18:38 More logical answer: If you are practicing medicine in African underprivileged area and mother is HIV +ve then bf is NOT C/I while here in USA it is C/I irrespective of any states. The reason - death in Africa is far more due to malnutrition than HIV (note: m talking about peds).

babbu5508 - 02-23-11 01:42 Happily there are only 5 contraindications listed:
"HIV"
"HTLV-1"
mother taking "antimetabolite drugs"
mother taking "therapeutic doses of radio pharmaceuticals"
mother taking "drugs of abuse"
