Do I have to go through ERAS to apply for PGY 2 or 3 positions? What is your recommendation?
ERAS is for applying to PGY-1 and Advanced PGY-2 spots,e.g., in Neuro,Aenesthesia,Radiology,etc which need a year of preliminary medicine.
U cannot apply to any of the PGY-3 spots or PGY-2 spots in categorical programs like IM,Surgery,FM,Psych,etc thro' ERAS.In order to apply for such spots u will have to either apply directly or use the services like www.residentswap.org ,www.openspots.com or Findaresident.

Ye,one can find open PGY-2,3 positions thro' the other two services as well.

The programs which have open spots provide a complete position description alongwith application process there.Yes, u can view the description of spots only after subscription.Some may even ask the applicants to fax or mail the application to their offices by some deadline.
On AAMC's Findaresident the programs get an intimation that u r interested and then they can view yur profile/resume and , if interested, contact u.
Ye, PDs will very much acknowledge the application because u will be applying to their programs in the same as they r asking u to .

Different people have different opinions regarding these services,but I think www.openspots.com is the one I wud go for.But, I have also heard much good about www.residentswap.org .
