Change in Minimum Step-2CK Passing Score
adonis123 - 06-21-10 02:05
It is for information of all the members that as stated in the USMLE Bulletin of Information, the level of proficiency required to meet the recommended minimum passing level for each USMLE Step examination is reviewed periodically and may be adjusted at any time.
As a result of such a review for USMLE Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK), the Step 2 Committee decided to raise the three-digit score recommended to pass Step 2 CK from 184 to 189. In addition, the Committee decided to closely monitor performance trends in the coming year and to re-examine minimum passing requirements in 2011.
The new minimum passing score will be applied to Step 2 CK examinations for which the first day of testing is on or after July 1, 2010.
Good Luck!

Ye, they have made an increase of 5 points in the three digit score over the previous one. This is indeed a big increase.I think it has also some thing to do with the increasing average scores which test takers r getting for the last two years.I have heard of many people getting three digit scores of over 250.That means the available online preparation tools like UWorld have made it easy to score high in USMLE exams.I also feel that 2007 was the year when this trend began. This was the year when USMLE World came into existance. It is pertinent to mention that before this a score of 237 was considered a 'Magic Score. It was when Kaplan ruled in the area of USMLE preparation.
Good Luck!

solindoc - 06-22-10 20:42 Do you know how this will affect our score? Does this mean that you will get a lower double digit score with the same three digit score? I have scheduled my exam for July 12th. I hope these 12 days do not cost me more than what I will get with more studying!!!:(

bingousmle - 06-23-10 09:09 in a way it does mean that the same 3 digit score will correspond to a lower 2 digit score but if you are prepared well dont worry and focus on your studies.. bests

It means that now a score of 189 corresponds to a two-digit score of 75 which otherwise previously corresponded to a score of 184.Thus, it means that now a higher three digit score will correspond to a given two-digit score than what used to be there previously. It also depends on the mean scores and standard deviation of the recent test-takers.USMLE scoring is developed in such a way that a scores from a given year can be compared to the scores from some other year.
Whatever the case one has to only aim at scoring high in the USMLE exams as low scores r of no use to the applicants.
Good Luck!

It is specifically for Step-2CK.If they make any such changes in case of Step-1 and Step-3 then they will issue separate announcements for that.
Good Luck!
