I am presenting below the year 2009 salaries for doctors in Australia.I am presenting it here for comparison with that of salaries of Doctors working in the US:
Doctors' Salaries in Australia:
Interestingly, salaries can vary quite significantly from state to state but the
table below gives a guide to what you can expect in terms of remuneration
from a position in Australia. Overtime is paid on a “fee for service” as a
specialist, or hourly basis for junior staff, so the more you work the more you
will be paid.
Salary packaging is a perk that doctors in Australia enjoy to minimise the tax
they pay on their base salary. It involves “sacrificing” a portion of your salary
and them claiming it back tax free, through your spending on dining out,
mortgage payments, computers etc. Each hospital has its own scheme but it
greatly increases the amount of money in your pocket and keeps it away from
the tax man!
Intern(PGY1) 60,000$ - 75,000$ (AUD)
Resident/SHO(PGY2/3) 65,000$ - 90,000$
Registrar 77,012$ - 130,264$
Career Medical Officer 110,277 - 180,424$
Staff Specialist 200,000 - 400,000$
These are base salary rates and overtime, on-call, after hours etc will add to
the base remuneration.
Tax Rates 2009
Taxable Income Tax on this income :
$1 - $6,000 Nil
$6,001 - $34,000 15c for every $1 over $6,000
$34,001 - $80,000 $3,600 plus 30c for every $1 over $30,000
$75,001 - $180,000 $17,100 plus 40c for every $1 over $75,000
$180,001 and over $47,1000 plus 45c for every $1 over
$150,000
