eras and nrmp?
anasarca0101 - 03-18-08 12:51
hi
can somebody tell me what is the difference between nrmp and eras?
and
the letter of recommendation from non-US clinician, does it play a major role in your application? would the letter from ,lets say, head of college of medicine of a country has more influence compare to a letter from a general clinician?
thank you

Re: eras and nrmp?
doctor1 - 03-18-08 13:41 ok for the 1st question , eras ios for the programs to get ur documents . for u to apply and basically for the muttual intercation between the applicanst and the programs
nrmp lets u submit the rank order list , also for the programs to submit tehir rank order list so its for mutual ranking process

Re: eras and nrmp?
doctor1 - 03-18-08 13:42 also a deans letetr makes a lot of difference for the amgs but not for the imgs, and as long as ur lor doesnt have any negative remarks in it it diesnot matter who writes it, but on the otehr hand a lor by a us dr makes a real difference

Re: eras and nrmp?
radhamesramos - 03-18-08 15:42 LORs are a strong component of your application, but for some PDs it is just a secondary one if you are really strong in other points like having or not USCE, recent graduation year, and high scores...Of course, a good LOR from a well-respected clinician in the US is a strong asset..always

Re: eras and nrmp?
radhamesramos - 03-31-08 20:04 But I guess now they are very busy with the signing of contracts, and waiting for their new residents, and the visa process if they matched foreigners

Re: eras and nrmp?
anasarca0101 - 04-02-08 08:29 hey guys
thanks for your concern! doctor1, regarding usce, there are some difficulties , i'm still doing my 2 yrs of internship in my country , now in 2nd yr ,so i cannot leave whenever i wanted to. My plan is ( maybe you guys can tell me what do u think and advice)
1) finish cs in june this yr
2) if i pass cs ( must pass it, cos i'm start studying for step 3 already!!) then do step3 in october or nov this yr.
3) get all the admin stuff done,eg, dean's letter, recommendation,cv,personal statement before september 2008
4) wait for my step 3 score , hopefully before dec 2008 so i can put into eras
simply apply for 2009 match..hehe , sound very naive but my consideration is,by reading so many thread on how many obstacles and frustrations ppl going through,my feeling is the later i apply , the less chance that i'm going to get into the program ( i want to do IM, preferably in university program, won't complain if i got into community) cos there is downward trend for IMG to get matched as more ppl are applying. so i'd rather try this yr,if i don't succeed, i'll try next yr again.
it's hard for me to get usce and lor from US cos of personal issues. All i can do now is to get high mark on usmle, AND i know u guys hate this question, ( i will smack myself for u )with score of 233/94 for step 1 and 240/99 for step 2, if i got 90 or above for step 3, do u think i stand a good chance to get into IM program??

Re: eras and nrmp?
doctor1 - 04-02-08 08:59 definitely, first of all congradulations for ur excellent scores , ur plan seems petty well chalked but as u say that u have a 2 yr internsghip in ur home country y dont u come up with acase report before submitting ur cv to eras for 2009 match taht i am sure is betetr than step 3 score for u as u have good scores already in the other 2 steps,

Well, with your scores, onlyy a pass maark in USMLE step 3 would be enough. Rememmber that you will be taking an exam that most of residents take in their second or third year. And step 1 and 2 is what PDs look at. So, congratulations for your great scores. And just try to make any USCE, no matter if it is only a month

Re: eras and nrmp?
meghaww - 04-03-08 16:25 i have one question----
how many lors can u ask in one observership
one of my friend gathered 5 in one and a half month of observership
one more friend got only one
so is it possible to get atleast 2 from one month of observership
if that is the case to whom we should contact and how to go about it?
thanks

It's quite simple, you need to build a good rapport with your attendings and once you and they feel comfortable you may ask them to write you the LOR's you're looking for.

Re: eras and nrmp?
radhamesramos - 04-05-08 13:21 And also, ask for the letter-writing rules in every program. Since some programs forbid their attendings to write down letters of recommendation to observers. It happened to me

Re: eras and nrmp?
meghaww - 04-06-08 21:42 oh really !!!!!!!!!
thats sad
we can anyway request and see once
i guess in some program they give more than 2
also radhamesramos -- did u get one from mount sinai miami or not???????????
thanks for info

Re: eras and nrmp?
radhamesramos - 04-07-08 12:38 In both programs you can get LORs, Mount Sinai doesn't have anything against them, but remember you are not supposed to make any contact with patients, so basically, what are the going to write in your letter? If you did have contact with the patients, they cannot write down that on a LOR. This made JAckson Memorial/UM surgery program to forbid attendings writing LORs to observers since last year, but while I was there some observers got LORs with certain attendings that are known to do that, what I don't know is what they did put in those letters.

Re: eras and nrmp?
meghaww - 04-08-08 19:37 hi radhe,

i know its very early but i seem very lost in that place

Re: eras and nrmp?
radhamesramos - 04-09-08 10:32 I told you, go from down to top: make yourself the intern's best friend, then with the residents, and like that it would be more comfortable to you to speak to the attendings. Remember, because of the high number of observers they have every year they try to avoid them because they know they are after a residency position and LORS(everybody), so you have to understand them. So, make it natural. Become so important to the residents, that they would do the talking for you. Mount Sinai is great to do so because it is a small program. In others, you will be lost
