I have been told that it is very difficult for a international medical graduate such a myself to get a surgical(esp. general or pediatric cardiac surgery) residency match. However, about my self. i finished moscow medical academy with honors, in 1997. and gold medalin. i 've some researchs work gust in pediatric cardiac surgery (137 articals in Russia and international conferances also i finished residency 6,6 years in pediatric cardiac surgery in moscow. also i had PhD IN Cardiovascular surgery in 2003, now i work and study as post-doctor fellowship in complex pediatric cardiac surgery, my position asist.professor in pediatric cardiac surgery. What advice would you give me in order to significantly improve my chances of getting an general surgery or pediatric cardiac surgery residency.
2)Is it easier to get a speciality fellowship after completing a local surgical residency
3) Are chances of getting a surgical residency better after a PhD and if yes which field's PhD and Dsc. (medicine) from Russia would help me to get an general surgery residency . thank you

tigrangev - 01-27-08 23:23 Hey everybody
I'm in almost same situation as "deigheidy" - graduated 1996 , done with residancy and felloship in adult cardiaovascular surgery in Armenia, ECFMG certified (dec 2007), research.., articles..., teaching experience (for USMLE preparation) in USA, but I didn't get any interviews not in surgery, not even in internal medicine (I did apply too late -- at the end of december).
Do you think that I have a chance to get surgery residency in scramble?
Is there any straigth cardiac surgery RESIDENCY program in USA?
Thanks

radhamesramos - 01-28-08 11:35 Both of you have good chances. The problem with you two is the following: No USCE. Try to get Clinical experience from the U.S. Once you go to an observership or externship, they will see how you know your stuff, you shine, then you get Letters of recommendation, and probably apply in the same hospital, you only need above the average grades, and you'll see how you get a position...but please, get into the system, If you don't get into hospitals (research to a lesser extent), this would be very difficult to you

mindswapper - 02-05-08 17:14 Excellent creds... U guys are already highly qualified and I do not see any reason on why u guys wanna do a 'new' residency and start all over again.
U guys can possibly get a fellowship spot and then become one of the faculty in the US!

mindswapper - 02-14-08 10:11 I bet u are over-qualified for a residency spot!
Go for a fellowship spot of one or 2 yrs duration, or better still... apply for a faculty position directly! U have a great CV. Why do u hafta go thru all this when u are already a super-specialist?

radhamesramos - 02-14-08 11:29 In Miami I met a doctor who got his specialty training from Israel, that came to UM to do research and now is faculty. He is amazing, and his resume is awesome
