Getting a job after US residency!!!

Hi!

We all know American doctors, surgeons, internists etc. make a lot of money. But to get a job as an attending, is it easy if you have a US residency? Is there any website that can give information on what percentage of doctors who complete residency programms in different states actually get jobs?

Thanks

Thise numbers are not very specific ones, and even if you find a website tht gives this info (probably usmletomd.com), it is not going to be very accurate, since a lot of doctors when finish their residencies pursue other interests rather than be attending: some go to a fellowship, others just decide to go back to their countries of origin.

Getting a job has gotten easier if you did a primary specialty, like IM, surgery, paeds, ob/gyn, psych, FM. With a fellowship it becomes harder to get a job, but some have gotten, but you got to know that wht you'll receive is a job in a place you probably won't like (some people even love theses places), unless an American Citizen or GC

Only if u have a US residency, u can get an 'unrestricted' licence and only then u can work as an attending!

Otherwise it is very difficult and only if u have very heavy contacts, then u can work under supervision!

look at the faculty profiles in the programs u have applied to and i am sure that gives u enough input fot ur question , also once u join residency i am sure by the end of the first yr u can know that from ur attendings.

Yes, but remember, once you finish your 3 year waiver, you get a GC and then you are free to do whatever you want

Can you detail that for me radh?? I mean if you're on H1b, can this visa turn into a GC and how? What about J1, If I finish my training I know I would have to go back, then what will be the process if I wana come back and practice in the US?

The good thing about an H1B visa is that allows you to work...not like a J1 visa which is an exchange. Once you finish a residency with a H1B visa, you can get a job in an area or a position that no GC holder or citizen want have (believe me there is a lot out there), like a waiver for J-1, or even you can get a spot as an attending in the institution you trained at...but they must be able to sponsor you for a job, cannot fall in the H1 Visa cap (usually non-for profit organizations can do that), and you must be able to prove that actually you are working and earning money...once you get that job, you can hire a lawyer and apply for the GC...if your case is strong (if you make 150000 a yyear at least, believe me your case will be strong), the GC process takes between 18 months to 3 years, so you must hold that job for that amount of time.

An easier way is to marry an American citizen while in the U.S (shorter not easier, sorry since marriage is not easy).

When you do the waiver for a J1 visa, what changes is your visa status from J1 to H1, and then there you have to wait for the 3 years to apply for the H1 visa. if you are sponsored by an O visa, then you can apply for GC any moment after 1 year (in some cases even less) of holding that job

Thanks radh, a thorough response. A couple points, if you're on J1 and your done with your residency and fellowship and got a job in "underserved area" which qualified you to a J1 waiver, does your J1 changes into H1?? Cause that's what i got from the last paragraph in your reply.
The other point is, I know that in one point you will have to leave and work for your country for 2 years, what are the option afterward?

Your are right, if you get the waiver, your visa status will change from J1 to H1 (or O, but that is almost impossible), and from there you can start inquiring about getting the GC.

Always remember, if you are on J1 and cannot get the waiver, the 2 year return to the country you applied from applies to you, after those two years, if you find a job in the U.S as an attending, then you will come on a H1 visa
