First: it is easier to take it after you have been a year or two in a residency program, because you'll get a lot of experience that subsequently will help you in the exam, of couse you won't have as much time to study as someone who is not in a residency program, but the practical experience will help you a lot. Second: it is harder for an IMG to get into a residency program without step 3. So, if you feel ready to take it, do it. It is one less exam to go, and it will make your application look better in the eyes of a PD
