Only striated muscle is found in the muscularis externa of the upper 1/3 of the esophagus. The middle 1/3 of the esophagus consists of a mixture of striated and smooth muscle and the lower 1/3 is solely smooth muscle. The duodenum and colon have smooth muscle in their muscularis externa.
