For HIV infected women:

(a) Surviellence consist of pap smear on TWICE yearly basis (compared to once yearly for Non HIV women)

(b) ASCUS on pap smear of HIV ---> directly to colposcopy

If the patient has a relatively normal CD4 count, after 2 negative smears, you can resume the usual screening intervals recommended for HIV-negative females. However, if the patient has a CD4 count < 200 cells/mm3, screening every 6 months is recommended. Any detection of cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) is treated the same as in HIV-negative women. Remember that it is not unusual for multiple STDs to be transmitted together, so consider testing for other STDs when obtaining a Pap smear.

ASCUS in a non HIV patient will prompt for checking for the HPV antibodies.... is the same approach assumed otherwise also? ??

HPV infection is detected more frequently, is more persistent and is more difficult to treat in women living with HIV compared to HIV-negative women.
