Ye, the minimum number is,off course, one.
The answer to yur question is that there is no limit on how many research papers or publication one shud have.One shud try to have as many as he/she can.It is not only the quantity which mattersbut it is the quality which matters.If one has even one publication/research paper in an international journal/magazine then ,off course, that will be of immense value.
BTW, even case reports do strengthen one's CV.

I agree with adnois,
Research is helpful in two ways:
(a) It adds to your CV
(b) Since you will be working for long with your mentor, he/she can push your residency application.
So, before starting research, look for influential faculty member in your interested specialty also.
