The incubation period for Rocky Mountain spotted fever
has a range of 1 to 14 days. A brief prodromal period consisting of
headache and malaise is typically followed by the abrupt onset of fever and
chills. A maculopapular rash starts on the second to fourth day of illness on
the flexor surfaces of the wrists and ankles before moving in a central direction.
Typically, the palms and soles are involved. The rash can become
hemorrhagic within 1 or 2 days. Hyponatremia and thrombocytopenia
may be seen.
