TheOne - 10-10-06 21:43 Wow, is that really you Doctor???
Conrad Fischer
it's a big pleasure to have your posts here.
I will add that Dental procedures "below the gum line", Renal "cystoscopy, etc.", GI "endoscopy, etc." and Pulmonary "Bronchoscopy, etc." in high risk patients "conginital heart disease, MVP+MR, previous IE, etc." require IE Prophylaxis.

Re: IE prophylaxis
Jumana - 10-11-06 05:17 Prophylaxis is required if there is BOTH and increased risk of bacteremia such as dental work with blood AND a cardiac lesion in which bacteria can stick.
Hence, dental fillings alone do NOT need prophylaxis because they do not cause bleeding. Even if you have a high risk cardiac lesion such as VSD, MR, AR or AS. You must have BOTH the risky procedure AND the risky lesion.
Other examples of procedures NOT needing prophylaxis are flexible endoscopy, and gyn procedures.
good luck y'all!
Conrad Fischer
In real life if there is an active lower GI bleed and endoscopy...would that be considered a risk and therefore prophylaxis?

TheOne - 10-11-06 11:53 hi ination,
In real life, Active Lower GI bleeding + Endoscopy are NOT indications for IE prophylaxis.
