A 60 years old housewife has a painful skin lesion that recently developed on her left hand. She tried using over-the-counter antibiotic cream but it has not helped. Her medical history is significant for hypertension and diabetes mellitus that are well controlled with oral medication. She has three teenage boys who are excellent scholars and engaged in many sports activities, but she complains that, unfortunately, she does not have time to enjoy them from all the housework related to having four men to take care of. Physical examination shows that her
hands are dry and unkempt. In the third interdigital space there is an ill-defined erythematous patch covered with thick, macerated, white scale and with a deep, raw fissure at the base. Her nails are soft and with layers peeling off the free edges. Which of the following is the most appropriate prophylactic measure to prevent this disorder?
A. Minimize wetting of hands
B. Switching to a hypoallergenic detergent
C. Using a prescription-strength antibiotic cream
D. Using an antiperspirant on the hands
E. Wearing cotton gloves at night
