A 23 year old male complains of a bump on his penis. He states that the bump first occured a week ago. The patient has a past medical history of asthma and eczema for which he is taking an albuterol inhalor occasionally and topical steroid cream occasionally. He had a pneumonia 6 months ago for which he was prescribed azithromycin, which has subsequently resolved. The patient has allergies to pencillin which gives a rash, sulfa drugs which causes a severe reaction as well as food allergies to peanuts, nuts and shellfish. On physical exam you note a painless beefy red ulcer.

Three weeks of treatment with erythromycin, streptomycin, or tetracycline, or 12 weeks of treatment with ampicillin are standard forms of therapy. Normally, the infection will begin to subside within a week of treatment, but the full treatment period must be followed in order to minimize the possibility of relapse.
