34 yr old male with 2 wk h/o intermittent rectal bleeding, no oter symptoms
family h/o: Similar h/o in father who underwent colectomy at 50 yr of age,father also have prostate ca; breast ca in mother & mother's sister
Clinical exam & lab: in normal limits
on sigmoidoscopy: numerous polyps that can't be counted. Most polyps lesss then 1 cm & can't be counted. two lesion biopsied & showed benign adenoma.
pt return 1 wk after for advice:

sounds like having FAP. Colectomy becomes mandatory

familial adenomatous polyposis which requires prophylactic colectomy as each of the adenomatous polyps have the potential of becoming malignant
