Dear Adonis,

Please, does emergency medicine residency need one year of transitonal program just like radiology, surgery, ophthalmology, dermatology do? I know that the radiologies, dermatologies, etc need transitional program to get into, but is that also needed for emergency medicine residency?

ACGME-accredited EM categorical training programs are three or four years in length and may be configured in one of three ways.

PGY 1-4: A four-year program that begins with the first postgraduate year of training
PGY 1-3: A three-year program that begins with the first postgraduate year of training
PGY 2-4: A three-year program that begins following completion of a first postgraduate year of training

A PGY2-4 EM Program requires a Prelim Medicine, Surgery or Transitional year.

Best Wishes!
