is it possible for surgery
amawad85 - 03-23-08 05:28
I think as IMG to get surgical residency,it is difficult but NOT impossible,
so we need faithful advice about what can we do to get surgery...

Re: is it possible for surgery
doctor1 - 03-23-08 15:39 yup its definitely tough but not impossible , in case u have post graduate training in surgery that definitely adds, in acse its form a reputed institute thats a big+, overseas experince counts and scores , i am not very sure about research in it but getting a lor from a us surgeon beats all these

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 03-24-08 13:48 You can get a preliminary position and then build up a reputation until they make you categorical...I know 5 very close IMGs who did that, and I know 2 IMGs who got prematched in surgery this year (categorical of course), so it is possible, myself, I got one interview in surgery, but did not match, and my credentials are not very good, they are average...so it is possible

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 03-31-08 13:42 Usually it goes from the mid 80s and up. Of course, if you are below 90, there is a lot extra to do, like USCE, step 3, and publications will help. Also somebody you know inside the program. Anyways, these things are preferred now even if you are in the high 90s (since there is a lot of 99s going around there).
I know a guy who had one interview in surgery with 76/78 and no USCE, no step 3. How did he do that? Two classmates who ae residents in the program. Well, he did not match,, but at least he got the interview

Re: is it possible for surgery
doctor1 - 03-31-08 15:33 thats true never thought that contacts can make so much of difference here in the us,unlike other countries ..where most of the stuff goes just by the cv and the results,i do know some one withe similar scores who secured a spot in surgery residency and now is doing fellowship, it surprises me

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 03-31-08 19:49 shouldn't be surprised. In america they say a lot: "It's not what you know, it's who you know". Even though they don't say that a lot in the medical field because they want us physicians to be different from the rest of professionals in the US saying that the process of selection is fairer, it is truer everyday in each one of the programs nationwide

meghaww - 04-01-08 20:45 oh in that case people with no contacts r no where in the interview list and forget abt getting residency!!!!!!!!!!!!
i still feel there might be some good way out from this problem
the entire journey of usmle is indeed difficult

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 04-02-08 10:55 That is my particular case, even though my credentials improved a lot from last year, the fact that some people helped me from the inside gave me a a jumpstart.

knowing some one helps a lot but on the other hand having no contacts wont hurt the chances either its just tough road make easy with contacts,

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 04-02-08 14:46 of course ypur credentials are what matter most, since even if you have a friend who is a PD, with bad credentials, you won't have a lot of chances.
I'm saying this because this is the truth, that even if you have fairly good credentials you have to know someone to get in. This does not apply to indivinduals with outstanding credentials.

Re: is it possible for surgery
radhamesramos - 04-15-08 13:57 Yes! and let the senior and chief residents know that you are applying there for next year. Competition is though, but worse is not to try.
