As the lungs mature and become better able to produce surfactant, the ratio of lecithin to sphingomyelin increases in the amniotic fluid.

An L/S ratio of 2 or more indicates a relatively low risk of infant respiratory distress syndrome, and an L/S ratio of less than 1.5 is associated with a high risk of infant respiratory distress syndrome.

mtniharika - 05-25-10 04:00 Fetal lung maturity occurs during the 2 to 3 weeks period when the L/S ratio increases to 2.0 or more, PI decreases, and PG becomes detectable. Because PG appears later in gestation, it is a good indicator of maturity
