LORs
fancyface - 02-19-08 20:48
I have only 2 LORs so far,how do I get more ? what I mean is, other than doing observership /externships who else can be asked for a Letter of recommendation ?I 'm asking this regarding ERAS application, does it make my application look bad or incomplete ? I'm a permanent US resident & I have some really good friends who are physicians practicing here for many years,is it acceptable to get LOR from them ?

Re: LORs
InSitu - 02-19-08 21:05 A minimum of 3 is recommended (most programs require a minimum of 3). I don't see why not get recommendations from these physicians you know.

mindswapper - 02-20-08 09:44 Those LoRs shud talk abt ur skills and talent rather than just another LoR!

Re: LORs
radhamesramos - 02-20-08 11:02 some programs do not allow attendings to make LORs for Observers, others make pretty bad letters for observers, because they cannot say that the observers did procedures, so you would sound like a lame candidate for the PDs...other programs they really make you look good, and those are the letters you should get. So it is like a lottery ticket

fancyface - 02-20-08 15:51 So which programs do you mean can make a candidate look good ? do you mean it depends on the person who is writing the letter or the program ? can you clarify this please ?

Re: LORs
doctor1 - 02-20-08 16:46 it entirely depends on the person writing th letetr for you and not the program ..its more or less their personal impression about your clinical abilities and regarding your interpersonal skills

Re: LORs
mindswapper - 02-21-08 09:26 Besides, Obsies give little scope to write abt u coz u dont 'do' anything!

Re: LORs
agamamber - 02-22-08 08:06 plz tell how much LOR from a private practitioner helps in getting residency and for how long an observership shud be done.

Re: LORs
mindswapper - 02-22-08 08:40 The longer an Obsie, the better.
The more an experience is hands-on, the better.
The more better the program where u are doing ur Obsie, the better the LoR.
The more the LoR writer is known to the program where u are applying, the better.
There are no set regulations or prescribed recommendations for these!

Re: LORs
radhamesramos - 02-22-08 09:24 To set an example: At UM/Jacksons in Elective surgery observerships, attendings are not allowed to write a LOR to an observer, those are hteir rules...A friend of mine convinced an attending to do so, and the letter was pretty bad. If you rotate in other departments, the decision about the LOR is up to the attending. In Internal Medicine, they usually do. But, as I said, it depends on the attending, the program and the rules it has

Re: LORs
mindswapper - 02-23-08 06:08 If they do NOT give a LoR, then what benefit do we get?
We are already well trained in our home country and I dont think we learn thru this further training esp, in just one month.

Re: LORs
TheOne - 02-23-08 14:38 You can get excellent LOR form the attendings if you made them like you !! I keep using radha's word "Be Proactive" as it summerize what you need to do during your observership. Just wait till the last 10 days before approaching them. Good luck and let us know how it went with you.

radhamesramos - 02-23-08 17:43 Thanks TheOne, that word has helped me a lot during the whole process, even during the interviews, that is the word that Staff and Faculty wants to hear

Re: LORs
radhamesramos - 02-25-08 09:44 I was in Jackson, and I heard that in the Cardiothoracic surgery dept, probably you could get a decent LOR, but transplant, man, I've heard stories there from the observers...like they never have time, otr they don't even pay you any attention; on the other hand, if you happen to be nearby Gaettano Ciancio in transplant (don't know in what unit he is), he is the one that helps out IMGs (or tries) since he is one of us.
Hope this has changed
