Selegiline is a MAO inhibitor that can be used in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. However, meperidine is contraindicated in patients taking MAO inhibitors because of the possibility of excitation or depression that may result. Excitation symptoms include agitation, skeletal muscle rigidity, hyperpyrexia and depressive symptoms (e.g. hypotension, hypoventilation and coma).
