it is a good idea to do the mph before residency. many programs esp. family med, pediat, and internal medicine like you to have an mph and increase your chance of getting in. depending upon the unive you apply the fee differs. yale charges u 20,000. boston university: 15000, USC: 12000, Harvard: 25000. you might find some cheaper ones. the fee applies mostly for the first semester. if u get ta or ra you will end up paying nothing but u need to pay for the registration in most programs. also note that some mph programs are 2 years and some just 1 yr.
the other alternative would be working with a prof. on a researh project and write a paper.
good luck

I think that a MPH is perfect if you are planning to continue a career in public health, you want to be director of a hospital or you want to continue in research, otherwise it would be a waste of time and money, of course, it gives you some prestige, but if you are going to be in private practice for ever, a MPH is not worthy

.I think it is better to start with research.

TA is teaching assistantship and RA is a better position which stands for research asssistantship. i can say the fee for the registration depends really on where you want to apply. my gut feeling is something between 7000 and 25000.
