My bad fate

I did not Match
(I went to match with only one i/v though).
I scrambled; nothing happened!
Now I am gonna take Indian exams and study in my home country only. My American dreams are shattered and have come to an end - once and for all.

Re: My bad fate
mindswapper - 03-20-08 13:49 There are several reasons why I say so.
1. My scores are mid-80s
2. I have attempt in CS
3. I am trying for Surgery residency.
4. I am not willing to do 'some' other specialty just for the sake of some $$$ (i.e. to stay in the US). Surgery is my passion.
5. Money is an issue too

Re: My bad fate
Sarahhh - 03-20-08 14:09 okay this kinda talk really gets me mad.. why would you want to quit on something you have worked all your life for??? just cause you didnt match the first time doesnt mean its never going to happen.. you just have to believe in it and keep going.. some people here havent matched the first time but after 3 to 4 tries they got through.. its all a matter of time.. i havent matched this is my first time in the game.. but im gonna keep trying.. never give up!!!!!!!!!!

Re: My bad fate
mindswapper - 03-20-08 14:14 Do u think it is still possible with this profile?
If hypothetically, I am ready to gamble for another year how will I improve my CV for the next match?
(How abt the money involved in it? Where will I go for it?)
I already did 2 Obsies; got 2 LoRs. I have a lot of Indian research experience.
What more can I do? (other than step3)
#6
Re: My bad fate
Sarahhh - 03-20-08 14:20 try getting US clinical experience.. not an observership cause i did an observership it sorta counted but it isnt the same thing.. and finish step 3 before you even try for the match next time and score high on it.... mention your indian research experience.. and believe in yourself.. if you really want somethiing you will go all out to get it no matter how many times you fall..

Re: My bad fate
radhamesramos - 03-20-08 14:21 nothing else, just take step 3, do more obsies, and apply more carefully. My profile is like yours and I Matched in IM (I know is not surgery, but it is getting harder everyday too). But, hey if you want to give up, it is up to you...this was y third year trying, and I did it

mindswapper - 03-20-08 14:24 1st... congrats Rads!
Real USCE? How wud I pay for it? Where will I stay?
Already my parents have shelled out a lot of money! Is it rational for me to be a burden on them still?

meghaww - 03-21-08 01:10 hey mindswapper,

my profile is just like urs
my score r not very high one in ninettes and one 79

last yr didnt get any ivs

Re: My bad fate
mindswapper - 03-21-08 03:25 @nina:
Research Asst is NOT USCE.
@meghaw:
I tried to secure a research spot earlier also; but all were unpaid/ voluntary. Plus, they would not sponsor me a visa; they want me to come on my own on a Visitors' visa (B1/ B2 visa), spend by myself and work for them without any form of stipend. How will I survive then?
I do not wanna quit myself but what is the point in pursuing something that is impossible? If I am trying for the next yr's match, then I shud improve my current status and then apply again. But because of these practical difficulties, how will I do that?

Re: My bad fate
TheOne - 03-21-08 11:52 Hi everyone,
I don't know how to start my reply so I will do it as usual.. Direct & precise.
Last year I had no interviews, that was simply because I applied late (October) and choosed competitve specialties (Surgery & Uni. based IM) and had old LORs.
I passed Step 3 and returned back to the country where I'm a refugee in. I applied for a position in Neuro-Surgery and got it! worked there for about 6 months before finding out that ERAS is telling me that I have 3 interviews, why? Applied on time (Sept. 1st), choosed FM only, got excellent LORs from my mentors and had Step 3 in my hand.
I didn't match this year either, 2 years in a row, I felt bad to be honest as when I looked back I had worked hard to reach to this point. I talked to my family before the Match results and was telling them about my plans of returning back in case I don't make it, they both told me about their little secret of investing in me, 2/3 of the assets that they have to be sold and the money to be given to me to use it in any possible way to improve my next year application. I come from a middle-class income, well educated family and from one of the worst countries "safty-wise" in the world.
I know you will all tell me that this is unfair, you're 28 and still depending on your family, they are on their late 50's and now is the time for them to enjoy what they really worked hard to get.
I agree, but don't you all think that our families are more excited than us about our future plans? Don't you think that they will live a much much better life if we secured something in this part of the world?
Don't you think that they are making a smart investment when they buy their own son's stocks?
Life isn't easy, sacrifices need to be given, obstacles need to be passed and detours must be taken.. But never ever stop, don't give up, look at your goal and keep trying to get it.
I have no USCE, so that's my next goal. For you guys, look for the holes on your application, the ones that the PDs are looking through and fill them up.
Good Luck to you all..

mindswapper - 03-21-08 13:47 @ TheOne:
I feel sorry for u; and at the same time I thank u for ur advice.
But (my own personal opinion) what I feel is: in the path of establishing myself in this world, I cannot be selfish at the cost of my parents. I wanna secure a residency spot in my home country, which shall serve as a back-up in case I fail in achieving my dreams abt the US.
They wud be content that I have atleast done my residency in India and that I am a specialist here. Then, i.e., after residency in India, I might try for the US.
I am ready to sacrifice; but not the choice of specialty!
@ agamamber:
Marrying an American gal is not possible for me although I am unmarried, coz I already have my own gal. I can't cheat her love!

meghaww - 03-22-08 00:23 hi theone and mindswapper,
listning to both of ur stories i can tell u one thing for sure.
each one who goes through this process of usmle , face similar prob in the house. regarding finances, and age related facts which u wrote in the previous posts, we all go through that.
some times when u dont match, this thing worsens.
but ultimately its ur determination which is checked by others in this way.
u be strong and go ahead and do more observerships i feel
best of luck

Re: My bad fate
mindswapper - 03-22-08 23:52 Thanks everyone for ur advices!
I need sometime to think too!
Even then, I might only postpone the US residency dreams. I will not give-up forever; I will try for it after doing Indian residency (which I shall have as a back-up).

As a Visitor on a B1/ B2 visa, one cannot work in the US - part-time or full time. It is illegal to do so.

radhamesramos - 03-31-08 13:50 Just please, let's not give ideas here that can break the law. This is a serious forum, and just the hints about breaking the law of any country whatsoever is not atttractive. That is my hmble opinion! Sorry, if I offended anybody

Re: My bad fate
doctor1 - 03-31-08 15:59 i too thoroughly agree that it is illegal to work on b1/b2 visa but its another source tahts it!! def much less illegal than letting the unmatched positions being filled b4 the time line, this was posted fro information sake as a hisp friend of mine used to work for a mexican eat out place

Re: My bad fate
radhamesramos - 03-31-08 19:43 I know what you mean! The thing is that I think that illegal behavior (even if sometimes seems to be justified) shouldn't be encouraged in a forum that really cares about FMGs. This is one of the few places around the net where we can genuinely express ourselves. Imagine what American citizens might think if we encourage breaking the law.
Sorry if I sound like some kind of prudish or a conservative intolerant guy. I posses a B1/B2 visa like most of you, and besides the thoughts of working with it or marrying with an American girl for business purposes have come a lot to my mind, I always think that when I speak or demand for my rights, I want to do it with pride and not feeling guilty
