Uusally the type of visa they give you for the CS is a B visa which is a non-immigrant visa with multiple entries. Sometimes they give you this visa for 1 year, 5 or 10 years. Sometimes only an entry valid for 3 months. That's up the consul that interviews you. If they give it to you for multiple entries, you can use it several times while still in effect. For example, you can use it for the CS, Step 3, interviews, and most of the observerships.

A J or H visa is given when you get a contract, either a residency spot, a job or a Research position. For more info go to USCIS.gov

thnx 4 replying but lets say i have taken step2 cs and match season is coming up i m on a visit visa like b1 and i want to stay for match ,can i extend my visa or i will have to come back? ,and if i match can i convert my b1 into j1 or h1b

You can do the following with your B1 or B2 visas:
1) Extension.
2) Change it to an immigrant visa (green card) in case someone get married or wins the lottery.
3) Chnge to a J1 or H1b, in case you get matched.
