Need Study Tips
philomena - 07-22-10 10:44
I am studying theory "full time". I am taking a break from work until I pass at least step 1. So, I have the entire days and nights to get ready for the step, but...I get bored and I waste time. I have difficulties to pay always attention and to remain focused. Any tips and how to study? Thanks.

Select books like Kaplan and donot use lots of other books.Use First Aid for Step-1 to skim thro' the high yield material.Do not try to memorise lots of facts.U only need to remember the clinically relevant material.
Do two readings of the subjects and then do questions online from USMLE World Q Bank only in test mode.Do ,at least, 100 questions daily.Note down their explanations.A score of above 65% (average) is very good.
Good Luck!

Re: Need Study Tips
bingousmle - 07-22-10 11:49 i wsa facing a similar problem.. here is a trick that i tried... usually the initial 15 minutes are the ones where you ll think to give up.. so tune yourself and say that you are just going to give it a try for 15 minutes without any distraction.. and usually after 15 minutes once a link is established you ll continue reading.. give it a try

Re: Need Study Tips
babbu5508 - 07-27-10 03:22 i think you can get rid of the problem by trying different tasks...like when u r bored of theory, go on to questions or other subject,etc....

Re: Need Study Tips
bingousmle - 07-27-10 07:11 yeah babbu is right.. in fact if you want there are many flashcards available for step one.. they are really high yield and give a brisk revision.. so intersperse their use with other stuff..

Re: Need Study Tips
bingousmle - 07-28-10 07:24 i have a great post by Jason Leonard but since it contains tables i am unable to post it here.. so just posting the matter i can.. if you need the entire version you can always leave your email..
Know yourself - if you can study for 12 hours a day 7 days a week, then that's great. If you can't do that, forcing yourself to do so will not be effective. I max out at about 8 hours, so I never studied more than 8 hours a day. If youâre not a morning person, donât try to start studying every day at 7am because you wonât be effective⦠start instead at noon and just work later. Do take some time off... if you're burnt out and tired, you won't be as focused as you need to be and you'll be wasting your time. Switch-up your study locations if that helps you maintain focus â for example, alternate between home, the U of L library, the unit labs, a coffee shop, and Barnes & Noble. Youâll take the exam in a room full of other people, most of whom are taking a different exam than you (some who type obnoxiously loud), so studying at least part of the time in a mildly noisy environment will make you more prepared for the actual test environment. And just like for the 1st two years of medical school, remember that just because your friends do one thing doesn't mean you have to too.
