usually 88 is the cut off point, but when comorbid conditions such as diabetes, ischemic cardiac disease and other conditions are presesnt, we can start even if SaO2 more than 88%

ysemak: somebody else asked me this questions before also..i would rather prefer to wait to see the responces from other members, I am used to that , i do the same thing in other forums , where I have " 0" points. hope you undrstand

It was just a joke, but it seems easier to see the explan-s right after you've answered the q-n instead of looking for it among other responses. No one can see the correct answer before submitting his own. It is your right to do it in way you want, and I appreciate your participation here, especially when not a lot of members seem to be overactive :)

home oxygen therapy:
â– Arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) is less than or equal to 55 mm Hg (millimeters of mercury, a measure of pressure).
â– Arterial oxygen saturation is less than or equal to 88%.
â– Arterial partial pressure of oxygen (PaO2) is between 56 mm Hg and 59 mm Hg, or oxygen saturation is 89% and you have:
-Evidence of right-side heart failure due to breathing problems (cor pulmonale).
-Heart failure.
-An increased number of red blood cells (erythrocytosis).
-Arterial oxygen saturation is greater than 88% when you are resting but becomes less than or equal to 88% when you are exercising or sleeping.

I think answer is d becos SaO2 less than 95 is enough to cause CO2 accumulation whch paradoxically can induce hyperventilation whch will prove to be detrimental in a ischaemic heart disease ptnt,however tolerable in a normal patient.
