Re: observership or step 3 sackatdoc - 04-21-09 01:46 with kind of competition that is there now, bad economy and all, there is no option, one has to get both, or get ready to wait for another year for matching, till you fulfill both, unfortunate but true.

It is a difficult question to answer.
The USCE(observerships) may be called "the new step-3".The US LOR's are given a lot of weightage by the PD's because they predict your level of performance as a resident.
But,the great advantage of doing step-3 is that the PD's do not have to worry about your passing it.So,PD's are more than willing to offer you a position against the one who has not done it.
Doing both would be very ideal.
But,if u want to make a choice between these and are sure of passing the Step-3,then do go for that instead. Just finish the USMLE series.

Yes,Step-3 helps an IMG in getting an H1B visa.
Bingo,yes, if Step-2CK is really fresh in your mind then I think this is the appropriate time for starting your preparation for Step-3.But, keep in mind that Step-3 is not simply a retread of Step2CK.Step-3 stresses on the continuing management scenarios.
