Obstetric-Adenexal Cyst & Pregnancy

A 25-year-old G2P0 Caucasian woman comes to the office for a prenatal visit. She is 11-weeks pregnant. She had an induced abortion six years ago. She denies the use of tobacco, alcohol or illicit drugs. She takes 800 micrograms of folic acid and a multivitamin supplement daily. A recently ordered abdominal sonogram shows normal placental maturation and an adequate size of the embryo for gestational age. There is a 7 cm left adnexal cyst present in the sonogram, which was previously identified in an ultrasound evaluation during her 7th week of pregnancy. Which of the following is the most appropriate strategy to prevent any complications?

mass is
larger than 5 cm in size and persists beyond the first trimester or shows no regression in subsequent visits --> surgery
during the second trimester to avoid acute

babbu5508 - 09-30-10 01:14 remove ovarian cysts 6 to 8 cm in size, as these are most likely to rupture, and even if they do not, they can cause a lot discomfort on the pregnant women.
