Operations for sugical residents.

Hi I was wondering, does any one know how many oparations on average does a surgical resident do himself/herself (not assisting) a week. I heard that the surgical training is best in the USA. Does any one know?

Well, that is a very difficult thing to answer, because this varies from program to program. Some programs let you operate very early in your training, others don't. There are some programs that even discriminate between Categorical and Preliminary residents, so the Categoricals got more rotations where they do tend to operate more, but this is hard to predict, and you have to know each program.

Training in the U.S is good, because of the variety of cases you get to see, the rotations, the technology, and because academics is emphasized, but there are some countries like France, Ireland, Germany, and Japan that have very good residency programs in surgery. The money is less, not so academical as the U.S. but still good

The rule for procuring license or to sit the AB exam is to have done atleast a 1000 surgeries at the end of residency! (Of course, as the Operating surgeon)

so, it is more difficult in some programs than in others to acheive these goals.

Mostly it is possible to fulfill the requirement; if not, then the experience during fellowship or while working under supervision may be used to obtain licence or to sit the Boards.

One program you get all the surgeries necessary to fill out your credentials even by 4th year is UM/JAckson

So it depends on the program!
