'Outside the match' Wat Does It Mean?

The ECFMG eporter has this specific phrase : " a significant number of IMG
applicants obtain positions outside of the Match. For example, while
4,698 IMGs obtained PGY-1 positions through the 2008 Match, 7,276 IMGs
entered PGY-1 for the 2008-2009 academic year. "
My question is what are the other ways other than the match to get a residency position? I mean according to this eporter, about 1800 residents get a position outside the match?
Thanks

It means a 'prematch'.Prematch is an offer made by the programs to applicants whom they like a lot during the interviews and want them to join their programs. So, a contract is signed between them and thus an applicant will cancel all his/her remaining interviews and withdraw from NRMP Match. As it takes place before the Match Day so it is called prematch.

Good Luck!
