physical exam

hello everybody,
is it true that we should constantly run a commentary while doing the physical exam on the patient.should we tell SP all the finding e.i. heart sounds are normal without murmur, no wheezes while listening to lung, etc while doing exam or right after we are done with the pyhsical exam?

TheOne - 10-14-06 15:47 hi Kingkong,
What Jumana described is the same what I did on my test. Inform the patient that you will perform a physical for him "Sir/Mam. I will now examine your chest, heart, etc." and use layman terms all the time, when you find something ask the patient (a surgical scar, suture line, etc.), if you encounter a patient with extensive "moles" in his body, ask him "did you consult a physician or a dermatologist to check these moles?"
There is no need to tell the findings while you are examining the patient, just summarize the history, what do you think "Differential diagnosis", tell him that you will order some test "it's ok to give an idea about these test, like CXR, Blood tests, etc. Tell the patient "When we get the test results, we will meet again to discuss them and to start the treatment". Smile, shake the patient hand, wish him a good day and leave the room.

drsri117 - 01-11-08 13:03 yup you have to keep giving a running commentory!!
the basic plot is interact with the patient and donot at anypoint or time make him feel neglected or lost!!
even when you are washing your hands
and address him by his or her name allways

radhamesramos - 01-14-08 13:52 Besides, if you tell somebody why are you touching his/her belly or putting your hands on their heads or somewhere else, you are invading their privacy with their consent
