A Preliminary position is a one year training in either Medicine,Surgery,or Pediatrics.A prelim year is a requirement for entering into an advanced program like Radiology,Neurology, etc.
A Categorical residency progam is program like Medicine,Surgery,Pediatrics,Obs and Gynae which can be started directly and is usually of 3 -4 yrs duration.
An Advanced program requires a preliminary year in either Medicine or Surgery in order to be started. The examples are Neuro,Radio which require a pelim Medicine year to be completed by an applicant before starting the three years of actual Radio or Neuro Program.
Best Wishes!
