PTSD and substance abuse

PTSD is associated with substance abuse. Don't use benzos...why? and what treatment will you give in that case?

Flouxetine is a good drug along with beta blockers. Other antidepressants can be used. Also the patient should engage in psychotherapy.

I am not sure why benzos are a contraindication, where did you read that?

Benzos are a contraindication because they do the following:

1. Increase short term memory loss and lead to problems

2. Like alcohol cause disinhibition and may lead to suicide, murder or more commonly cause the patient to say things that hurt other people especially their wives

3. It also has a pleasant effect and thus may lead to addiction and also may lead to the patient telling their physicians to increase the dose which makes points 1 and 2 worse
