Hi Adonis 123 and co, thanks for the wonderful way you guys have been answering questions on this forum. I have already taken and passed my steps 1 and 2-CS exams. Please, I wish to know if I should apply to as many programs as possible now or if I should wait till the result of my Step 2 CK comes out on October 6th before going on to apply to as many programs as possible. If I am going to wait till then, what are the reasons for doing so? Please, note that I will get ECFMG certified ten days after getting my step 2 CK result. Again, what are my chances of getiing interviews (internal medicine) in my current state (to be certified around the middle of October)? Thanks is advance.

i think you can apply for the programs and update the step2ck scores later...but the chances of getting interviews based on step1 scores alone is diffict...

what was your step one score ? do you need a visa? these are 2 important things.. but still i think you should apply now only to those programs which do not want you to be ECFMG certified.. its a calculated risk.

Hi bingousmle, my step 1 score - 91; I am GC holder. I just wonna know if it is advisable to many programs now or wait till October 6th when my result would be out.

Apply now as u have aready passed the un-predictabe Step-2CS exam.Anyways, u will be certainly passing the Step-2CK exam when u take it.
Though chances of getting interviews at this satge is not that big but u must still give it a try.The points which go in yur favour r yur good Step-1 score,US citizenship,Step-2CS pass.
BTW, what is yur graduation year?
Do apply now!
Good Luck!

Thanks, Adonis, for your reply. My year of graduation may be a minus for me; I graduated in 2001, and I am an FMG with a green card. I have already taken step 2 CK, and the result would be out on October 6th, 2010. Honestly, I don't know if I would score in the 90s in step 2 CK too; some people advised me to wait till my step 2 ck result comes out on October 6th before applying to more programs (so far, I have already applied to 20 programs). Their reason was that if I do not make up to 90 in step 2 CK, I should then apply to those not-so-competitive programs (programs that require just first attemp pass or 85 or so in step 2 ck). They also advised that if I score up to 90 in my step 2 ck, I would then be able to apply to higher-score demanding programs.

I am doing MPH now, to complete it in December 2010 or Spring 2011. I have LORs from American physicians

Please, what is your advice here, Adonis? Should I wait till my CK result comes out on October 6th to make sure my score is good or should I apply to more programs now? You know, when you are done with these USMLE exams, you are always afraid that there may be an accident (you may be afraid of your score) though I had passed the others (step 1 and CS) first attempt.

i think you need to apply wisely, since I was in a similar position last year and so were some of my friends and the programs will extend an interview only if one is ECFMG certified.

yeah its important because even though a few programs will state that they dont need people to be certified, the competition is high, and so the ERAS filters are often used..

Hi Bingousmle, can I ask you some questions at this point? You said you and some of your friends were in a similar situation last year, right? So, did you and your friends eventually get interviews after getting certified late last year? Did you apply to any program around first week of October (I call this late application), last year, and did you get any interviews from these late applications (I mean applications from October,)? Finally, could you please tell me more about what ERAS filters mean? In other words, what do you mean by that?

Thanks in advance!

As yur results r coming on 6th October so I think waiting until then won't make a big diffference. So,u can apply on that date, but keep everything ready so that u can apply then.
US LORs will definitely help.U must have done research during yur MPH so that wil be a big plus at university programs.Did u include info about MPH in yur CAF.That shud make a difference.Make yur mentors at yur MPH program call the programs they know about.
So, wait for the results as they r only a week away.
Good Luck!

i agree with adonis.. thats the most prudent approach you can take.. i applied to a limited programs on 12th oct, 31 to quote the exact number.. while my friends applied to something like 150... they got like 1 interview but that wasnt sufficient to match.. but a huge plus is mentors at your MPH program.. they are the ones who can fetch you interviews..
