Preliminary positions r only of one year. There r prelimnary positions in Surgery,Medicine,Pediatrics.
Categorical positions r complete residencies. They may be for a period of 3yrs or more according to the specialty.
There r also Transitional year programs which r like the rotatory internship which IMGs after they finish their medical school years.
There r also combined residency programs which comprise of two speciatlties each. The examples r Med-Peds(Medicine-Pediatrics),Neuro-Psych(Neuology-Psychaitry),etc. Such combined residencies r usually of four years duration.
Good Luck!
