For Residency in Newzealand one needs first to pass one of the following series of exams:
1.USMLE Step-1 and USMLE Step-2CK
2.PLAB-1
3.AMC MCQ
After one is done with one of the above series of exams,he/she has take the IELTS test of English language and pass it with a certain score.Once one is done with IELTS then he/she will be eligible to take the NZREX(Clinical) which is administered in Newzealand by the Medical Council of Newzealand. When one is done with NZREX he/she will be eligible to apply for one year internship in Newzealand. After completing one year internship one will get a full registeration with the medical council and will be eligible to aplly for a residency training in his/her chosen specialty.
For further info refer to the medical council website at www.mcnz.org.nz .U will find all other info there.

Good Luck!

I think one will have to work a bit harder for a residency than an internship.Keep in mind that one can continue doing RMO jobs at the same time and earn a good money. But, at the same time I think it will be definitely possible to get into a primary care residency than other residencies.
Good Luck!

can one apply for the internship at any time of the year or are there some specific dates one needs to that?

No, there is no specific time to apply for an internship. One can apply round the year and usually one is successful in getting an internship in three to four months.
Good Luck!
