Hi , my name is H T .iam a surgical resident in my first year in Amman ,Jordan. I intend to participate in USMLE soon but iam worried about my chances in joining a residency program because as I heared from other colleagues. it's almost impossible to join a surgical residency program in America , is that right? please reply me soon

Re: surgical residency InSitu - 01-06-08 11:17 Its is hard and competitive but not impossibe. Do not get discouraged by others. Prepare yourself well and become a strong candidate with good scores and then try to improve other parts of your application such us US clinical experience if possible.

Try to get good grades, and please try to do a rotation via your hospital in a hospital in the U.S. Meet people, impress them, and get good LORs. This is key

Can I know which hospital you're doing your surgical residency with?

Re: surgical residency radhamesramos - 01-09-08 10:21 Currently I am applying, but I've done a couple of boserverships in different hospitals, so I have seen the field and how hard it is to get surgery in the U.S. but previous experience and good grades, and good letters of recommendation can do a lot for you, and the only way to get it is coming to America. So, try to contact a couple of hospitals in the U.S. (University hospitals mainly), ask them if they let you rotate for a couple of months in their surgical service, then ask permission to your residency director, and go there, meet people, new techniques, impress them, get good grades, and you will be in a residency in the U.S. for sure
