Re: thanks radhamesramos
radhamesramos - 02-20-08 10:36 Dear Meghaww,
First, congratulations on getting these observerships, these are very good opportunities to demonstrate who you really are, and meet important people, and get good LORs, and even a chance to interview and secure a preliminary position.
But you have to be there, it is not the attitude of I cannot do anything, so I won't do nothing, is to be there, and they would yo allow to do stuff, and even invite you for an interview...always happens like that.
If you really are interested in OB/GYN, meet the staff at the hospital, make friends there, and try to give them a couple of hours of your time left from the Surgery Obsie...they don't care if you did an observership in surgery, if they get to know you at your best, they would love to have you there

mindswapper - 02-20-08 10:43 For Ob/Gyn, those guys shud know u well! These Obsies help u to get to know the faculty and they get to know abt u!

meghaww - 02-21-08 05:31 hi,
will take care of what all u told me.
but the problem is mount sinai florida does not have obgyn program
so if i was wondering how to make use of that observership.
since i was interested in both surgery and gyn, i took up this observership in gen surgery
if i write this in my CAF, that i have done surgery obse, will it go against me??? since i plan to apply for both obgyn and prelim surgery.
thanks in advance

Re: thanks radhamesramos
mindswapper - 02-21-08 09:49 No, it will not go against u; coz Surgery & Ob-Gyn are almost complimentary, atleast in India.
But it will be more beneficial to u if u did an Obsie in ObGyn itself for that to have an effect on ur Ob-Gyn chances.
Ur Surgery Obsie will help u better in Surg only!

Re: thanks radhamesramos
mindswapper - 02-21-08 12:03 U cud ask for a recommended accommodation from the hosp staff itself. They might know better. Plus, will u not accept a residency spot in 'that' unsafe area?

Re: thanks radhamesramos
meghaww - 02-21-08 23:37 i will def take the residency there, if i get it!!!!!!!!!!!! :)

Re: thanks radhamesramos
mindswapper - 02-22-08 08:35 Then why do u hesitate if it is safe or not. Go ahead...
As an IMG, we are not bothered abt the neighborhood; we only want a chance! This is our sad state! The choice is not in our hands!

Re: thanks radhamesramos
radhamesramos - 02-22-08 09:32 A lot of people are taking residency spots in those said unsafe areas, because some AMGs do not want to go there, example DMC; on the other hand, some of the country best hospitals are in very unsafe areas. So, the first thing you have to do is do your homework, and check the transportation system of the area, and see where you can find acommodation that is close to buses that can take you in the morning, and take you back home at night, usually is risky, but believe I've done it in several cities in the U.S, and as long you stay on your way, something rarely happens, almost never

Be busy!! the observerships and, hopefully, the LORs that you will get will help alot. Cleraing the Steps, including Step 3, is a big plus. Taking courses on ATLS or others will help. Check the American College of Surgeons website to have more ideas on what kinda courses and activities they have.

Good luck..

radhamesramos - 02-23-08 17:23 TheOne is right, if you do tose things and get to be known by faculty and staff, your chances are sligthly better than others, besides grades which also help a lot
