InSitu - 01-19-08 00:57 What do you mean by useful for USCE? are you looking for books to help you in your clinical rotations or externship?

radhamesramos - 01-19-08 11:02 There is the Feliciano textbook for Trauma surgery, but it is so long that not even traumatologists read it all. If it is for Step 2, the Blueprints is an excllent book. For USCE get the current in surgery, not as complete as others but pretty good and readable

drmjmh - 01-19-08 18:38 Yea, I mean something useful for rotations and externships.
What is your personal opinion about this textbook: Trauma Manual:Trauma and Acute Care Surgery?
I am looking forward to hearing from you at your earliest convenience.
Kind Regards,
Mohammad,

radhamesramos - 01-22-08 13:18 That is the Feliciano textbook i was referring too. It is a super book, it is so complete, it is even hard to review and to check stuff. But the best out there.
Juan Asensio from UM is writing another one, due to this year, but don't know the date yet. You can try the McKenney/Shatz trauma book, but a litte hard to get outside Miami

laparotomy - 01-26-08 13:36 Personally I think if you are in an externship you should focus on practicing practical stuff and creating a good impression to get a good letter of recommendation. If you really want to study (which you should) then pick a few patients (preferably your patients) and look up their disease in the Sabiston or even on google. Then follow up your patient and see if the patient is treated according to the text book. This will:
1. Increase your knowledge
2. Gives a good impression because you will be able to answer questions on ward rounds and theatre. (your attending is more likely to ask you about diseases on the ward than something not on your ward like tetralogy of fallot or porphyria.
3. It gives you an opportunity to ask intelligent questions which also creates a good impression for you.
Good luck.

Re: Trauma/Emergency Surgery Textbook
radhamesramos - 01-26-08 15:53 That is right, so the best reviews, the ones that will give you the edge and are easy to read are either the Currents on surgical diagnosis or the Washington Manual. Schwartz and Sabiston are kind of long, but they give you the depth you need in some diseases
